August 5, 2006 - 13 hour plus Game Session at Chris’

Picture Album from the Game Day

We were running late, real late.  I had taken Kathy to yard sales and we picked up.060805-GameDay_C_Lay_001-small Zac to go gaming in the afternoon.  I did however pick up another copy of Supremacy at the Thrift Store for $15 and got Age of Mythology at Rockheads, in the morning though

When we got back home Erik was already waiting for us.  I had not packed up any games so I frantically gathered them up and we hurriedly packed the car.  Soon we were ready and Zac, Andrew, Erik and I loaded up and headed to Milwaukee.  We made good time and got there by about 2:30 in the afternoon.

As usual we took more games them we could play but we had our snacks, pizza, soda and more then enough games.

The first game that we played was a new one that I had gotten the week before Tempus.  This is a Civilization game that plays in under 2 hours.  So far everyone who has played has liked it.

Tyler (Chris’ advisor) looks on anxiously as the game begins.

Everything started out pretty friendly but as we spread out there were a few conflicts.  Eric (purple) pretty much had his own penensula but that was a double edge sword as he was limited where he could go until he got ships.

Chris (light blue) choose an area on the coast.  During the game he did not make as many cities but he did advance to the next age before the rest of us on several turns.

Zac (yellow) started out on the coast and had trouble expanding but had some vicious stacks of units.  He did not have that many cities but the other players were keeping an eye on the number of hexes their units occupied.  If they occupied more then 3 hexes they could be attacked.

Andrew (black) started off next to an inland lake.  This allowed him to spread out a little faster and he used almost all of his cities but his unit stacks were never that big so he tried to stay under the 3 hex rule to keep from being attacke.

Tim (red) started along the coast and spread out all along the one side of the board.  With Zac as his neighbor he was also watchful of keeping the number of occupied hexes small so Zac could not attack.

The pictures on the left show the board at the beginning of the last turn and the end of the game.  You can see how everybody has spread out their pieces to get the Victory Points for occupying non-mountain hexes.

After Tempus Sara and Stephen joined us and we played 2 eight player games of Bang with the Dodge City Expansion and the Fistful of Cards expansion.  I was a sheriff in the first game and hurt my deputies more then I did the bad guys.  I paid for it and ended up losing the game.  So far it was a night for outlaws.

060805-GameDay_C_Lay_008-medIn the next game Stephen was the sheriff and Eric and Sara where his deputies.  He was not happy about being the sheriff but he gave it his best shot.  His best allies were the renegades Tim and Andrew.  They kept killing everybody else to save the sheriff.  One of the deputies was killed by Indians and the other was killed by dynamite.  In the end the renegades could not keep the sheriff alive (so they could finish him off) and the sheriff was killed by dynamite.

Modern Art was next and we lost Sara and Tyler.  This is another new game since the last time we played.  It is an auction game where you buy and sell paintings.  There are different types of auctions; normal, closed, once around, double and set price.

I like this game but I do not think that I have won a game yet.

One of the funniest occasions in this game was when Stephen had a double normal auction for a couple of paintings near the end of the game.  That artist was very popular and the bidding was huge.  Every time that the price increased he got this thrilled look on his face that you see in the picture.  He made out like a bandit on those paintings.

We played 2 games and had a great time.

We never have 6 players together to play A Game of ThronesA Clash of Kings expansion so we broke it out and played for about 3 1/2 hours.  Zac was Stark (white), Stephen was Baratheon (yellow), Andrew was Martell (orange), Erik was Tyrell (green), Chris was Lanister (red) and Tim was Greyjoy (black).060805-GameDay_C_Lay_013-med

I (Tim) immediately made an alliance with Zac (Stark) that I would take Seagard, Flint’s Finger and Greywater Watch and then stay on this side of the River.  I would push down towards Lanister.  He (Zac) Stark could advance towards The Eyrie and Baratheon.

After a failed attempt to take Riverrun I realized that my best course (easiest) was to take the poorly defended Stark postition in the north instead of the heavily defended Lanister holdings.  So I stabbed Stark (Zac) in the back and attacked him.  Eventually Chris (House Lanister) won the game.  Zac was pretty upset that I attacked him but he was getting stronger then Lanister and I had to take the opportunity to attack him.

We played from 10pm to 1:30pm, 3 1/2 hours.  Everybody toughed it out but it was a struggle near the end.  I am afraid it might be a while before we play a Game of Throne at Chris’s house.  I like the game, Andrew does and Zac said it is growing on him, but I do not think that Chris is too hot on it.

060805-GameDay_C_Lay_022-medEverybody was up for a little lighter game so we played Alibi next.  We had played this with Paul, Colette, Steve and Carol up in the Dells but it was new to Chris, Stephen and Erik.  The person, location, weapon and motive cards were drawn and set aside in the box.  Then the rest of the cards were shuffled and dealt out to all of the players.

We played for a little over an hour and it was a real nail bitter.  In the end I managed to win even with a -20 penalty for saying it was the wrong person.

I made the first accusation but I had the person wrong.  This gave me -20 poins but in the end I still won.  The one thing that I figured out from previous games of Alibi is that it is better not to guess, if you are not reasonably sure.

It was now 3:20am and we decided to play one more light game, Colossal Arena.  Chris, Stephen, Andrew and me played the last time we had a session at Chris’ house.  Zac and Erik had not played before but the rules are not too hard and easily learned.  It was a fierce battle and the new players had that were learning the game did not fair too well.  In the end the younger players had the victory with Andrew finishing first and Stephen coming in 2nd.

After Colossal Arena we loaded up the Geo, thanked Chris for a great time and headed for home.

While we played games Kathy, Amanda (Zac’s fiancé), Emily (Amanda’s sister) and Nicki (Erik’s wife) had a girls night out at our house.  They watched chick flicks and other girlie things.

Erik’s wife called earlier (I think it was around midnight, during our “Game of Thrones) wondering when he was going to be home.  Amanda and Emily stayed at our house over night.  Nicki did not realize how late we played games so I hope we did not get him in trouble.

Our next game night at Chris’ is Sept 9 and we are going to try and play some of the games that we did not get to last time.  Games on the list for next time are:

and maybe:

and the quick multiplayer games like:

We had a great time and look forward to our next game day!!
