July 4th, 2006 - Game Session with 11 players.

Kathy invited some of the students from Carthage over to play board games on the 4th of July.  Five of them showed up and we had a good time playing games together.  We had 11 players but not all at the same time.

Amber wanted to play the railroad game (“Ticket to Ride”) but only 5 people can play and we had 8.  So Kathy, Amber and Tracy played “Ticket to Ride - Marklin” and the guys played “Settlers of Catan”.  I think the ladies had fun but it sure sounded to me like we (the guys) were laughing more and having a great time.  Maybe they (the ladies) were just more serious about their games.  From what I saw Amber and Tracy were taking the game pretty seriously, while Kathy was just along for the ride.

Jacob, Aaron, Jamie, Andrew and I played 2 games of “Settlers of Catan” while Kathy, Amber & Tracy played “Ticket to Ride - Marklin” and “Ticket to Ride”. The first game of Settlers was pretty much a blow out with Andrew winning.  The second game was much closer and 3 people could have won on the last turn, but Andrew won again.

After the guys finished “Settlers” and the ladies finished “Ticket to Ride”, some of the guys took a break and watched a Jeff Dunham DVD.  Kathy, Amber and Tracy was joined by Jacob for a game of “Ticket to Ride - Europe”, with Aaron observing and me helping Jacob learn the game.  It was a pretty aggressive game with lots of competition for the track in Italy.

This was followed up by a game of very short game of Railroad Tycoon on the middle map to show Tracy and Amber the game.  By the end of the little demo session Amber was ready to play on the full map the next time we play games.

After we finished “Railroad Tycoon”, Amber, Tracy, Jamie, Jacob & Aaron had to leave but we gained Zac, Andy and Eric as players.  So Andrew, Zac, Eric, Andy and myself played an interesting game of “Nuclear War”.

We used some house rules that let us build up our nuclear stockpiles before we started unleashing them upon each other.  Eric was new to this game and asked how large the population cards went when he saw somebody with a 25 million card.  We all figured he did not have that much, but he did end up winning the game in the end, with 8 million people left.

I do believe that everybody had a good time and I am looking forward to the next time we play games.
